WELCOME to Fab 5 for Faith Formation! My name is Elyse Winter and I will be your child’s teacher this year. This is my seventh year teaching faith formation and I see many familiar names on the list! At this time, we have 18 kids in the class and expect more to be registered in the coming weeks. I am the only teacher/assistant—last year we often broke into smaller groups to delve deeper into topics—so, if you can help, please let Wendi know. Diocesan rules dictate that we have two adults present in each classroom so we are desperate for helpers for this class!
I have two kids—Lily Clare in 8th at SLMS and Daniel in 10th at SLHS. Other community groups I am involved in include Girl Scouts (I have an.8th grade troop), volunteering at school, being a substitute teacher, and I sing in the choir here at Saint Mary’s. In addition to Lily Clare & Daniel, my family consists of my husband, Paul, and a small dog named Flynn.
What do we do in THE FAB 5? I like to remind the kids that they are at a half-way point between big sacraments: First Eucharist & Confirmation. We take many familiar topics (The Beatitudes, Ten Commandments, Our Father) and go deeper. We often use technology (when the church’s Wi-Fi cooperates) and view websites such as www.bustedhalo.com and outsidedabox.com to reinforce key concepts. We will be visited by Fr. Dave twice during the year and we also are key players in Faith Formation rallies, Masses & prayer services. In the past we have done the Jesse Tree for the church and we also celebrate the Last Supper.
Please let me know if you ever have any questions. I rarely send home papers anymore, instead e-mailing out our weekly summaries and posting on the Faith Formation website. I know kids are super busy with sports, too, so if you could let me know if your son or daughter will be absent, that will help with setting up the room and small group assignments (assuming we can get more helpers in the class).
Thanks! We are going to have a great year together!
