Welcome to the Elementary Faith Formation Site!
As the Body of Christ we are responsible for passing along the Catholic Faith to our children. The Faith Formation program at St. Mary's assists parents (the primary catechists of their children) by providing age appropriate lessons, activities, resources and fellowship.
Classes begin on Wednesday 9/13/17. This is a parent/child night. Everyone will start in the church at 4:30. After introductions, the children will be dismissed to the classrooms. Parents stay for the parent meeting. Parents will go the classroom for a "meet and greet" with the catechists at 5:15.
Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
The feast celebrates the dormition (or "falling asleep") of Mary and her bodily assumption into Heaven, before her body could begin to decay. This feast foretells our own bodily resurrection, and has been celebrated since the sixth century.
In many countries, this feast is the day on which people pray for a good harvest, and fruits and herbs are brought to church to be blessed and shared. A Portuguese custom that has found a home in the United States is the blessing of fishing boats and other watercraft on this feast day.
Today would be a good day to do some water play. At the kitchen sink, or in bins in the backyard, bring out washable dolls, doll clothes, plastic building blocks, toy vehicles, and other toys. Allow the children to give them a good washing and let them dry in the sun. You may also want to wash bikes of other outdoor equipment.
Mary, we honor you as Mother of God and our Mother, too. Keep us close to Jesus. Amen.
