Welcome to the Fab 5 for Faith Formation!
My name is Elyse Winter and I will be your child’s teacher this year. This is my tenth year teaching faith formation and I see many familiar names on the list! At this time, we have 25 kids in the class , and this year I am joined by Russell Smead as our classroom assistant
I have two kids—Lily Clare in 11th at SLHS and Daniel is in his first year at GVSU. Other community groups I am involved in include Girl Scouts (I have an11th grade troop), volunteering at school, being a substitute teacher, and I sing in the choir here at Saint Mary’s. In addition to Lily Clare & Daniel, my family consists of my husband, Paul and a large puppy named Hugh.
Russell lives in Nunica with his wife and three kids with one more on the way in November! His son Eli is in our class. Before living here, Russell served in the U.S. Army in various places around the country. His whole family joined the Catholic Church through R.C.I.A. in 2015. He has been teaching the high school youth at Saint Isidore parish for the last three years, but his family is just starting to attend Mass at Saint Mary’s. We are so lucky to have Russell!!
What do we do in THE FAB 5? I like to remind the kids that they are at a half-way point between big sacraments: First Eucharist & Confirmation. We are in the third year of using Gospel Weeklies, so those will come home each week. We also take many familiar topics (The Creed, The Beatitudes, Ten Commandments, Our Father) and go deeper. We use technology a lot in the classroom! We will be visited by Father Dave twice during the year and we also are key players in Faith Formation rallies, Masses & prayer services. In the past we have done the Jesse Tree for the church and we also celebrate the Last Supper near Easter. I also like to promote reading aloud and speaking in front of the class! Sometime we work math, writing, science and history into our faith formation lessons!
Please let me know if you every have any questions. I will keep you updated by e-mailing out our weekly summaries and posting them on the Faith Formation website. I know kids are super busy with sports, too, so if you could let me know if your son or daughter will be absent, that will help with setting up the room and small group assignments.
Thanks! We are going to have a great year together!!
