Today is National Call-in Day for Dreamers! Please take a moment to call your U.S. Senators and Representative and ask that they continue to work to enact legislation to protect those who are facing a possible deportation with the expiration of DACA next week. Fasting Regulations Fasting is observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by everyone 18 years of age and older, who has not yet celebrated their 59th birthday. On a fast day, one full meal is allowed. Two other meals - enough to maintain strength - may be taken, according to each one’s needs. But together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but consuming liquids, including milk and juices, is allowed. In addition, Abstinence is observed on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent by everyone 14 years of age and older. On days of abstinence no meat is allowed. Note that when one’s health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. If a person is unable to observe the above regulations due to health or other serious reasons, other suitable forms of self-denial are encouraged. The point of fasting and abstinence is to remind us of our radical need for God’s support as we undergo conversion in His love. Following the tragic shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, Daniel Cardinal DiNardo of Galveston-Houston, President of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, called for prayer and healing.
The full statement is as follows: "We are deeply saddened by the shootings in Broward County, Florida, and by the needless and tragic loss of life. May the mercy of God comfort the grieving families and sustain the wounded in their healing. Catholics and many other Christians have begun the journey of Lent today. I encourage us to unite our prayers and sacrifices for the healing and consolation of all those who have been affected by violence in these last weeks and for a conversion of heart, that our communities and nation will be marked by peace. I pray also for unity in seeking to build toward a society with fewer tragedies caused by senseless gun violence. Our hope is in the Lord, as he promised after his resurrection, 'behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age' (Mt. 28:20)." |
