St. Martin's Kids is encouraged by the generous support we receive from our parish family to continue with our call in improving the capacity and scope of care for the children living at the St. Martin de Porres Orphanage Centre. It is a bittersweet mission, the demand for its services are still very much needed with the addition of these sweet little ones! Many infants who are malnourished and have slim chance of survival will stay with Lynn Caraway until they are healthy. We regret to report that Lynn and Mike Caraway have left the country at the order of the Tanzanian Immigration. We are hoping for their quick return.

Construction of the new biogas system has started. This will provide a renewable source of fuel energy to be used in food preparation. It will benefit the orphanage in so many ways. Cow dung and other organic matter will 'feed' the biogas tank and convert that mass into cooking fuel. No longer will wood or charcoal be needed, thus reducing cooking time and prep. There will be less air pollution and risk of respiratory ailments. A by-product of bio-slurry will provide a safe liquid organic fertilizer that can increase crop yield by 25%. The stoves should be up and working by the end of January 2017. |
